ABOUT
Clusty, launched in 2004, aimed to revolutionize how users interacted with search results. Developed by Vivisimo, a company founded by three Carnegie Mellon scientists, Clusty set out to tackle the growing problem of information overload.
Vivisimo, the parent company behind Clusty, was established in 2000 by researchers who recognized the need for a more efficient way to organize and present search results. Their solution was a novel approach called “clustering,” which grouped search results into topics and subtopics.
Unlike traditional search engines that presented long lists of results, Clusty organized information into folder-like categories. This clustering technology allowed users to quickly grasp the main themes within their search results and focus on areas of interest. For example, a search for “Walt Disney” might return clusters such as Walt Disney World, Collectables, History, and Biography.
Clusty offered several search categories, including News, Web, Images, and Gossip. It also provided a customization option, allowing users to add specific search tabs like eBay, Slashdot, or Blogs. The engine’s intuitive interface included features such as:
- Expandable folders for subtopics
- Options to group results into clusters
- Preview windows for search results
- Dedicated tabs for shopping, news, blogs, and more
Clusty quickly gained recognition for its innovative approach. By 2010, the search engine was attracting approximately 100,000 unique visitors per month and handling millions of search queries. Its ability to reduce search spam and deliver more accurate results made it particularly appealing to users employing search engine optimization (SEO) techniques.
In May 2010, Yippy Inc. acquired Clusty for $5.55 million. This acquisition included not only the Clusty.com domain but also a license for Vivisimo’s Velocity software, which later became part of IBM Watson Explorer. Following the acquisition, Clusty was rebranded as Yippy.
